On Monday, Justice Oliver Saksak on behalf of the Chief Justice, Hon. Vincent Lunabek opened the Regional Workshop to Promote Substantive Justice which is being conducted by the Pacific Judicial Strengthening Initiative (PJSI) in Port Vila between 12-16 February, 2018.

The workshop is attended by twenty two judges and senior court staff, from across the Pacific region including Vanuatu, the Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Niue, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Tonga and Tuvalu.

The aim of the workshop is to build capacity of Pacific Island Country courts to improve the quality of substantive justice administered by the courts by developing Justice Improvement Plans for each country.

This Workshop will provide judges and court staff from across the Pacific region with the opportunity to share, exchange and develop professional experience. The workshop will also provide participants with 3 new toolkits on human rights, gender & family violence and enabling the rights of unrepresented litigants.

This topical workshop is one of the many conducted by the Pacific Judicial Strengthening Initiative to support the courts across the region. This initiative is funded by New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade which has supported promoting the rule of law across the Pacific over recent years.  The New Zealand High Commissioner Jonathan Schwass welcomed participants to the opening of this workshop at the Holiday Inn.
